Reformer pilates after 50: why springs are kinder than weights

Strength matters more with every decade, and how you build it matters too. The reformer was practically designed for training well in the second half of life.

Reformer pilates after 50: why springs are kinder than weights

Why strength after 50 is non-negotiable

From our fifties onward we naturally lose muscle unless we actively keep it, and with it goes some of the strength, balance and confidence that make everyday life easy. The good news: muscle responds to training at every age. The question is not whether to train, it is how to train in a way your joints will thank you for.

What makes the reformer different

Everyone moves at their own pace

In our classes, nobody is chasing anyone. Groups of up to eight mean the coach genuinely sees every person, every exercise has a gentler and a stronger version, and you work at the resistance that is right for your body on that day. If you have a medical condition or are recovering from surgery, check with your doctor first and tell your coach, who will adapt the session for you.

Starting later is an advantage

People who start reformer pilates later in life often progress remarkably fast, precisely because the machine gives support and feedback that free exercise does not. If your goal is to carry shopping without thinking, get off the floor easily, stand tall and keep hiking these hills for decades, this is the tool.
