Your first reformer class: what to wear and what to expect
The machine looks complicated and everyone else seems to know the ritual. Ten minutes of reading fixes both. Here is everything you need for class one.
What to wear
Fitted, comfortable clothing: leggings or fitted shorts and a top that stays put when you are lying down or upside down. Loose shirts slide toward your face during bridging and fall forward in kneeling work, and baggy fabric can catch in the moving parts of the machine. Nothing fancy required, just clothes that move with you.
Grip socks
Most studios, including ours, ask for socks with grips on the sole. They keep your feet from slipping on the footbar and straps and keep things hygienic on shared equipment. Forgot yours? At Casa Reformer we sell spare pairs at the studio, so you are never stuck.
Before class
- Arrive ten minutes early. Your coach will show you the machine and set it up for your height.
- Say it is your first time. This is the single most useful thing you can do. The coach will keep an eye on you, offer lighter spring options and translate any unfamiliar cues.
- Skip heavy meals in the hour before. A lot of the work happens lying down.
During class
Expect a guided sequence: footwork against the bar to warm up, core work with the straps, some kneeling or standing work, and stretches to finish. The springs support you more than you expect. If something feels wrong, say so. Every exercise has an easier version and no coach worth their salt minds adjusting.
After class
You will probably feel worked in muscles you did not know existed, especially deep in your core and around your hips. Mild next-day soreness is normal the first few times and fades as your body adapts. Most people are surprised by how quickly: by class three or four the machine starts to feel like an old friend.
