Reformer pilates near Malaga: from the city to Nerja
Reformer pilates is having its moment in Malaga city. Drive 50 minutes east along the coast, though, and until now the machines have mostly stopped at the city limits.
The Malaga boom
If you live in or visit Malaga city, you are spoiled: boutique reformer studios have been opening across the centre, with small group classes, English-speaking coaches and waiting lists that tell you everything about demand. Reformer pilates has quietly become one of the most booked workout formats in the world, and Malaga is riding the same wave as London, Amsterdam and Sydney.
Head east and the map empties
The Axarquia, the beautiful stretch of coast and hills east of the city that includes Torre del Mar, Torrox, Frigiliana and Nerja, is another story. You will find excellent gyms, mat pilates classes, and yoga in lovely settings. What has been much harder to find is a dedicated reformer studio: rooms built around the machines, with coached small groups and enough reformers to actually get a booking.
For the thousands of residents and long-stay visitors out here, that has meant either settling for mat work or planning reformer sessions around trips into the city.
Why the machine is worth the fuss
If you have only done mat pilates, the reformer is not a small upgrade. The springs support you where you are weak and resist you where you are strong, which is why reformer and mat classes feel like different disciplines. Beginners get further faster, and experienced movers finally get real load. It is also the format that suits the Axarquia's demographic beautifully: low impact, joint-friendly and brilliant after 50.
Nerja gets its own studio
That gap on the map is why Casa Reformer exists. We are opening a dedicated reformer studio at Calle Angustias 28, right in the centre of Nerja: eight reformers, classes in small groups of up to eight, and coaching in English and Spanish. Doors open after the summer of 2026.
